I spent the majority part of of my childhood hating anything that had to do with writing and reading. Don't blame me. Blame Uncle Kunle, my wretched lesson teacher who spent half of our lesson time flogging me because I write with my left hand and my handwriting was terrible. I will not also forget Aunty Esther, my Father's wicked step-sister. She nearly killed me for the same reason.
Writing gave me nightmares as a kid. So I grew up being a terrible writer. Though I didn't struggle much with reading, my writing was just so bad. I don't even know how I passed English in WEAC. I'm sure my letter was wack! Seeing myself write today is a huge surprise to me. How I went from the guy who hates anything that has to do with writing to loving it is a subject for another day. But for now, let's stay on the topic
Writing has been an age-long practice. It is as old as human existence. It's not just a method of passing information, It is a tool for the preservation and transmission of civilization and culture. In today's world, writing has become a fundamental part of our daily lives. From how we communicate and interact with each other, to how we do business and carry out transactions. Everybody ought to be writing, and here are 4 reasons why.
1. CRITICAL THINKING
Writing helps in improving the cognitive domain. It enhances the ability to think critically which is a major component in problem solving. Especially in the business world —good, clear, and concise thinking is a priceless asset. It is said that Jeff Bezos of Amazon relied so much on writing to hold critical and strategic meetings. Which sometimes required senior executives to read six pages of narrative memos before in-person meetings, according to Janet Choi of iDoneThis, writing fast company.
Choi cited a 2012 interview with Charlie Rose in which Bezos said: "When you write out your ideas in complete sentence and complete paragraph. It forces a deeper clarity of thinking." Choi added: "Writing with a narrative structure rather than relying on messaging in numbers or bullet points pushes people to think through problems within a fuller context."
The first step in problem solving is being able to articulate a problem and it takes a lot of critical thinking to do that. Writing regularly builds up an imaginary vocabulary bank that stores words and produces ideas.
2. ENHANCED COMMUNICATION
Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful leadership and thriving businesses. It is the thread that binds people, ideas, and organizations together. Writing is a fundamental form of communication. Writing allows individuals to convey their thoughts and ideas with clarity and precision. When you write, you have the opportunity to revise and refine your message, ensuring that it is well-structured and free from ambiguities.
This clarity is especially important in business, where miscommunication can lead to costly errors. Written documents such as reports, memos, and emails enable individuals to articulate their intentions in a well-organized and straightforward manner.
Writing encourages thoughtful reflection. When individuals sit down to write, they are forced to organize their thoughts, research, and consider various perspectives. This process promotes a deeper understanding of the subject matter and a more nuanced approach to communication. In leadership and decision-making, writing can help leaders weigh the pros and cons, evaluate risks, and make well-informed choices.
3. BOOST CREATIVITY
Creativity is a precious and powerful human faculty that enables us to generate new ideas, solve complex problems, and express ourselves in unique and imaginative ways.
Writing, at its core, is a cognitive exercise that engages the brain in complex ways. When you write, you activate various regions of the brain responsible for language, memory, and problem-solving. This mental workout, akin to regular exercise for the body, keeps your cognitive functions sharp and agile, including the part of your brain responsible for creative thinking.
One of the most accessible and effective ways to use writing to boost creativity is through journaling. Journaling encourages self-reflection and self-expression, enabling you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. As you record your daily life and inner musings, you're essentially creating a personal canvas for your creative mind to wander freely. Over time, this practice can help you develop a deeper connection with your thoughts and emotions, providing a fertile ground for innovative ideas to sprout.
Writing can serve as a potent tool for idea generation and brainstorming. When you're faced with a creative challenge, sitting down to write out your thoughts can help you organize and clarify your ideas. The act of writing allows you to see your thoughts in a tangible form, making it easier to analyze, expand, or modify them. Whether you're a writer looking for your next plot twist, a designer in search of inspiration, or a business professional developing a marketing campaign, writing down your initial concepts can stimulate your creative process.
4. MAKE MONEY
Making money with writing is not only possible but can also be a rewarding and fulfilling career. Whether you choose freelance writing, blogging, self-publishing, copywriting, or any other avenue, success often comes through a combination of skill, persistence, and creativity. The possibility that exist with writing is innumerable.
Writing is everybody's duty. Therefore, as you embark on your writing journey, remember that the most successful writers are those who never stop improving their craft and adapting to the evolving landscape of the writing industry. So, pick your path, write passionately, and watch your words turn into income.
